A musical retelling of L. Frank Baum’s Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Set in the context of modern African-American culture, this show shattered barriers on Broadway and beyond.
Simply put, The Wiz is a black version of The Wizard of Oz. The story line and characters are mostly faithful to the original movie, beginning with Dorothy living on a rundown farm in Kansas. A tornado transports Dorothy and her faithful dog Toto to an updated, city-like Oz, and that’s where the fun begins, with a sad Scarecrow, an uptight Tin Man, and a Lion in need of psychiatric counselling. Together, they set off on a journey to seek help from the Great Man of Oz. With upbeat music and jive lyrics, this show is sure to have you dancing in your seat!
